    Top Five Must-See Attractions - #1

Approaching the Greek Islands, whether on board a ship, train, or plane, your first impression will always be of mountains.

The mountains of Greece are rough and rugged; rocky not rounded and gentle like the Appalachian Mountains; wild, not snow-capped and majestic like the Alps. From afar, Greece appears harsh and unwelcoming. And perhaps, this is the reason why people today are drawn to its untamed landscape. What has defied ancient civilizations before from conquering the Greeks has become the very magnet that draws tourists in.

The beauty of Greece lies in the fact that it is a land of stark contrasts – huge, scraggly mountains towering over a vast area that is never far away from clear, blue waters. The entire territory of Greece is surrounded by no less than three large bodies of water. To the east lies the Aegean Sea, to the west the Ionian Sea, and to the south the Mediterranean Sea.

As a result, Greece is a top destination replete with idyllic island beaches and mountainous regions. For some idea on where to start your Grecian exploration, here is a list of the top five must-see attractions:

#1 Athens – The Acropolis and the Parthenon

The capital of Greece, the city dedicated to the Greek Goddess of War and Wisdom, the roots of democracy – it’s Athens, and there is no city quite like it.

In mythology, no less than three gods vied for the honor of being its patron, a position which was later bestowed on the Goddess Athena, who was credited for creating the Olive Tree.

In history, Athens is seat of high culture and politics. It was the first city-state and it was here that the republican form of government was formed. With great minds, such as Socrates and Plato for citizens, Athens was one of the most civilized cities in the world – a shining symbol of literature and the arts.

Today, after re-creating itself in time for the 2004 Olympic Games, it still is. But beyond the philosophies and passionate diatribes, Athens is also an affable city with outdoor cafes, laidback parks and gardens, pedestrian streets where you can take charming little walks – the better to appreciate the city’s many urban eccentricities.

No matter where you go in Athens or which direction you’re facing, if you look up, you are likely to find the Acropolis (high city). This is a huge citadel sitting high atop a flat rock about 150 m or 512 ft above sea level. Actually, all citadels situated on elevated surfaces for defense purposes would be technically known as “acropolis.” In this regard, even Castle Hill at Edinburgh is, for all intents and purposes, also an acropolis. However, because of the famous buildings crowning the Acropolis of Athens, it simply became known as “The Acropolis” without further qualification.

Among the famous buildings to be found on the Acropolis are the Propylaea, which serves as the gateway to the Acropolis, the Erectheum and the caryatids (columns carved to resemble figures of women, as guardians of the tomb), the Theatre of Dionysius, an outdoor theater, the Theatre of Herodes Atticus with its majestic and towering set of arches and pillars, and of course, the Parthenon, the center of the Acropolis itself and the temple dedicated to Athena.
