Greece Winter Vacation: MYTHS & FACTS

Greece is the land of myths, but like all Greek myths of gods and goddesses acting like human beings, these are mostly fantasies fleshed out a little by morbid imaginings.

MYTH #1: The Islands close for the winter season.

TRUTH: There are other people living in the islands, so life goes on year-round. While many of the large resorts will naturally be closed, there are still many hotels and inns in town that are more than willing to accommodate you.

It only makes sense that resorts and large hotels would close down. It is really not good for business to keep open a 300-room facility for the twenty or so guests who show up.

For the smaller hotels, inns, B&Bs, and even hostels, they stay open. With the larger establishments closed for the season, their business would certainly be picking up.

MYTH #2: The weather is great even at the height of winter.

TRUTH: Well, that’s not quite true. Much of the islands would experience nice weather, but do not make the mistake of thinking that Greece is a tropical country. It really isn’t. It is too far north for that.

Greece experiences winter, too – cold winds, rain and all. Rains are particularly frequent during the months of November to March.

Sometimes, the clouds will lit up and maybe you can catch a few rays on the beach. But don’t bet that the weather will stay sunny for long.

In fact, the kind of weather Greece has in winter is better for hiking and exploring. The country has many great museums and interesting sights worth checking out.

MYTH #3: With the Islands out of the question, you are left with nowhere else but Athens.

TRUTH: Again, the Islands stay the same even with the tourist season off. And what is wrong with staying in Athens? This is home to the Parthenon, the Acropolis, many great museums and restaurants. Places like Nafplio, Corinth, Epidavros, Myceneae, and the archeological sites of Peloponesos stay open in the winter.

In fact, the off-season is the best time to visit these places because you will find that it is much nicer giving these places a look-through with lesser crowd hogging the view or the space. Plus, your photographs will turn out great (You don’t have to edit out any tourists sprouting all over the place).
